The Big Idea!

We believe that undertaking social action empowers young people to become socially conscious leaders in their lives. At GSL, we’re committed to making this idea a reality by providing the support and opportunities needed for young people to take social action on the issues they care about and make a meaningful impact in their communities.

How does this work?

Taking social action can be challenging, so we have developed a structured learning pathway to simplify the process. Our Learning Framework, which forms the foundation of our programs, enables young people to engage in social action in 4 simple stages:

  • Explore: Discover a cause that speaks to their heart and aligns with their interests and talents.
  • Enquire: Dive deep into understanding the issue and its impact on those involved.
  • Engage: Unleash their creativity to design innovative solutions through brainstorming and refining ideas and take action!
  • Evidence: Reflect on their experience, document their growth and insights to inspire others.

This transformative experience is designed to ignite a young person’s sense of purpose, unleash their creative agency, and enhance their wellbeing. As students navigate these 4 stages, they master and hone essential skills in problem-solving, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, preparing them to adapt and excel in both life and the future workforce.

Our Inspiration

  • Our Learning Framework is crafted to ignite young people’s curiosity and creativity! We’ve combined the best principles from the Gold Standard Project-Based Learning by Buck Institute of Education and International Baccalaureate’s (IB) Service as Action & CAS (Creativity, Action, Service).  We’ve integrated key elements from these frameworks: tackling challenging questions, engaging in ongoing inquiry, ensuring real-world relevance, fostering regular reflection, and creating public showcases for learning. By the end of this journey, young people will have designed and implemented a social action project that makes a real difference.
  • To support young people to approach this journey with empathy and purpose, we provide them with toolkits inspired by design thinking. This problem-solving approach places empathy at the heart of inquiry, fuels experimentation, and deepens reflection. Research shows that “helping students to think like designers may better prepare them to deal with difficult situations and to solve complex problems in school, in their careers, and in life in general” (Razzouk & Shute, 2012). By providing students with these tools, we aim to equip them to become resilient lifelong learners!

“GSL is transformational for my students, and for me as a teacher.  We use GSL to support our IB Cas students, within the Design and Technology curriculum and as part of our SEN inclusivity strategy.  GSL membership has offered so much value and opportunities for our students and I would recommend all schools joining the community”

I learnt that the diversity of the world is so beautiful, and I truly believe now that, if we all connect and be kind to one another, we can accomplish so many different goals and tasks.
I really enjoyed the different sessions planned and the activities, I also enjoyed interacting with different people in the breakout rooms and getting to know them better by talking about the issues in our countries and our potential solutions.
GSL was good because, it helped us to learn many helpful things, and most importantly it helped us to find ourselves. It inspired us to succeed our goals, and advised a lot of ways to reach them.

With the work we did throughout the GSL process, we improved our planning, team work and cooperation skills. We believe that what GSL contributed the most to us is help us work harmoniously and with team spirit. We think that this will be useful for us in the future stages of our lives
